What Should I Do If My Car Key Stops Working?

If your car key suddenly stops working, don't panic. In many cases, the problem is something simple that can be fixed without replacing the key. Before assuming the key has failed, there are a few things you can check.

Check the Battery

A weak or dead battery is one of the most common reasons a remote key fob stops working. If your buttons have become unresponsive or the operating range has decreased, replacing the battery is a good first step. Most key fob batteries are inexpensive and can be replaced in just a few minutes.

Inspect the Key

Take a close look at the key for any visible signs of damage. Cracks in the casing, worn or missing buttons, water damage, or a bent key blade can all affect how the key functions. If the outer shell is damaged but the internal electronics are still working, replacing the shell may be all that's needed.

Try Your Spare Key

If you have a spare key, test it with your vehicle. If the spare works normally, the issue is likely with your original key. If neither key works, the problem may be with the vehicle itself, such as the battery, receiver, or another component.

Has the Key Been Programmed?

If you've recently purchased another key or remote, remember that most smart keys and transponder keys must be programmed to your vehicle before they'll start the engine or operate remote functions. A new battery alone won't eliminate the need for programming.
