Do the key blades contain a chip?

Do the key blades contain a chip?

It depends on the type of key. An emergency insert key blade may contain a transponder chip, which needs to be programmed as well as cut. A remote head key fob always has a transponder inside, so it needs both cutting and programming. A basic mechanical key has no chip and only needs cutting.

Where the chip actually lives

On a remote head key, the transponder chip sits inside the plastic head, alongside the remote's electronics, not in the metal blade itself. The blade's only job is to physically unlock your doors and, on traditional ignition vehicles, turn the ignition.

Uncut until you cut it

Blades typically ship uncut. Before the key can unlock your vehicle, it needs to be cut to match your existing locks, a separate step from any programming the remote requires.
